It would be easy to think a young Hip Hop producer from South East London would be all over today’s grime / trap / drill stylings; in Talos’ case you would be dead wrong. Talos swims against the current and keeps it all the way real, drawing inspiration from the likes of Madlib, Dilla, Q Tip, Mobb Deep, D’Angelo, Lucy pearl, Roy Ayers, Curtis mayfield & Lee Scratch Perry to name but a few.
A master of the 90’s feel: Vinyl crackle, dusty loops, heavy breaks, soulful melodies are the order of the day for Talos, as he has quickly becoming known as one of the smoothest Boom Bap producers in the UK. His signature ‘smoothed out’ sound has become synonymous with long time collaborator and label mate Coops, and his polished rhythms can be found all over the recently released ‘No Brainer’ and Coops’ earlier critically acclaimed material ‘Lost Soul’ & ‘God Complex’.
Talos’ most recent instrumental album, ‘Dissonance’, is indeed much more than a collection of 16 beat tracks, Talos has built up an entire concept around the album combining both the modern with the ancient, much like the loops and snippets he has brought together to create the record.
Following on from Dissonance‘, Talos returned with an exquisite 5 track EP entitled ‘IRIDESCENT’– As the swaying jellyfish on the cover suggests, this is a chilled out affair. The underwater sounds and textures with elements of neo soul and lo-fi found here are a testament to Talos’ ability to transport the listener to other worlds whilst keeping it all the way real.
Having already shelled down his very own Boiler Room set, and toured the UK and Europe alongside Coops, Talos remains grounded and prefers ‘…when someone catches you at a show and tells you how much they appreciate your music…that’s much more personal for me then landing a high profile placement’.
